European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
