The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
