Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
